To the surprise of no one before, during and after the Million Women March and the #MeToo campaign came to light, women have it especially rough in the mostly patriarchal societies in coffee-producing countries around the world. We in the producing, sourcing and roasting communities can and should do more to balance
the scales. Badbeard's has endeavored to bring women producers' coffees to the marketplace since our inception, through forward-thinking projects like Café Femenino and women-run importers like Elan Organic (now part of InterAmerican Coffee). Hey, they do a huge share of the work, so why not the economic benefits as well?! Seems like a no-brainer.
I jumped at the chance to roast the fine Guatemala La Morena for obvious reasons…great coffee of course, but more to the point a harbinger of women-run, turnkey operations for the future.” La Morena” (brown/brown sugar) resulted from the joining of forces of three different producers and three different regions but the success of the program soon saw it expand to 23 women producers in the Huehuetenango region. Genuine Origin's Volcafe Way program, which offers foundational, technical and financial amenities to growers has expanded even more.
La Morena Huehue comprises the Catuai, Pache-San Ramon, Sarchimor, Bourbon, and Caturra varietals and the farm elevations vary from 1600-1800 meters. In our light-medium roast profile there are
abundant and varied notes of Dark Chocolate, Cane Sugar and Citrus. The cup is clean and balanced, modestly bright, with a smooth finish….very “classic Guatemala”.
Highly recommended as a drip coffee, rich morning brew and chocolatey/complex enough to consider (please specify in the Notes section when ordering) as a single origin espresso
in a medium-mahogany roast profile!
