Recent years in Ethiopia have born witness to sea changes such as the relaxation of ECX (the country's ruling body coffee exchange auction) restrictions on direct sales, inviting greater transparency and benefits to forward-thinking organizations like METAD, a third-generation family owned business with a rich history that began after World War II when the Ethiopian Emperor awarded Muluemebet Emiru, the first African female pilot and family matriarch, with land in the Guji and Sidama zones that has become the Hambela Coffee Estate.
We are pleased to give an accounting of both washed and natural process coffees produced by Hambela under the watchful eye, through METAD, of director Aman Adinew. Through Aman's leadership, METAD has strengthened the local community with employment opportunities including a workforce that is over seventy percent women, educational opportunities including university scholarships and sponsorship for a state-of-the-art elementary school with more than 700 students, and healthcare for employees. METAD was also first to partner with Grounds for Health in Ethiopia to implement a successful cervical cancer screening program for women within the coffee growing communities.
Ethiopia Guji Hambela washed process is a fine product of the METAD Hambela washing station, in the Buku woreda, Guji District of Oromia State. Farm elevation ranges from 1900-2200 meters, and over 1000 smallholders collect their ripe cherry for processing at the washing station. Our light-medium roast highlights the fruit-forwardness of both dry fragrance and aroma in our recommended drip/pourover method. Prominent are notes of jasmine, melon, tangerine, black tea and cherry. Not overly delicate like some Yirgacheffes…plenty of body and mouthfeel, beefy enough to accompany a hearty roast even!
